“You’re cranky today.” Emily sized up Alexis at their morning break with a faint smile.

“I am?” She swept a hand across her face again, hoping to snag the piece of hair that kept tickling her. But came up short. Scowling, she tried again.

“What’s bothering you?” Emily kept all knowing looks to herself. Her friend’s face actually looked a little concerned.

“I’m tired of this conference and we’ve still got the rest of today and all of tomorrow to go.” She glared at the room where they’d be trapped for the rest of the day.

“At least we’re learning something today.”

Alexis couldn’t dispute that. “Today is more helpful than yesterday.” Barely. She still hadn’t snagged that strand of hair.

Emily tilted her head and inspected Alexis’s face. She pinched her fingers together and came away with a long piece of blonde hair. “Got it.”

“Thank you. That’s been driving me crazy.”

A sympathetic look crossed Emily’s serene visage. “Ah, you’re mad we can’t have lunch or coffee with our men.”

Blowing out a long breath of frustration, Alexis finally nodded. “That’s part of it. We’re stuck here, and honestly, I’ve yet to hear something worth the price of this conference. So this feels like a waste of time. I could be taking care of clients, and yes, spending time with Nick.”

“I hear you.” Emily’s eyes softened.

“You have plans with Grant tonight.” Not a question.

“He’s taking me to a restaurant that I suspect he’s never taken a woman to before. It seems he knows the owners and this is an escape place for him. It’s a bit of a drive.”

“Oh, things are progressing well for you two.” Alexis smiled at her friend. “You’re glowing.” She was really happy for Emily and Grant.

“I’m thrilled you directed him to me. You’re gorgeous and all, but I’m cute.” Emily’s grin made her breathtaking.

“You’re far closer to beautiful than cute.” Alexis had no trouble disputing her friend’s take on herself.

Emily’s eyes widened and she held up a finger. “You didn’t hear from Nick this morning, that’s why you’re grumpy.”

“I heard from him. I got a text around six-thirty that something went down in their lab and he had been at work for at least an hour.”

“Oh dear. That doesn’t sound good.” Emily’s eyes darkened.

“No. I’m grumpy because he’s in crisis mode and I’m here. I can’t even take him coffee or anything.” Her teeth dug into her lower lip. She hated not being able to help.

“We are essentially trapped. But I have an idea.” A wily look crossed Emily’s enthusiastic features. “Give me a moment.” She dug her phone out of her pocket and soon started talking animatedly on the other end.

Alexis couldn’t pick up the nuances because Emily moved across the room. The need to leave here drove her hard.

“Alexis, it’s nice to see you again.” The man who approached her offered her a gorgeous smile. She had seen Kurt in the crowd yesterday but hadn’t spoken to him. Not even a faint echo of attraction resounded inside her. A month ago she’d have flirted with Kurt.
